Internal linking strategy: the lever you fully control.

Internal links, the links between your own pages, are one of the few ranking levers you completely control, and one of the most underused. They help Google discover pages, understand how they relate, and decide which are important. A deliberate strategy concentrates authority where you want it.

In short

Internal links are a ranking lever you fully control: they aid discovery, signal relationships, and pass authority. Point your strongest pages at your most important ones, use descriptive consistent anchors, and interlink topic clusters. Most sites leave this lever unused.

What internal links do

Three jobs: they help Google discover and crawl pages, they signal relationships and topical relevance between pages, and they pass authority from stronger pages to others. A page with no internal links pointing to it is hard to find and starved of authority, however good it is.

Point authority at the pages that matter

Your strongest pages, the home page, popular content, have authority to share. Linking from them to your important commercial pages passes some of that strength along. Most sites do the opposite by accident: their money pages are barely linked internally while thin pages get all the links. Audit where your internal links actually point.

Use descriptive, consistent anchor text

The clickable text of an internal link tells Google what the target page is about. Descriptive anchors ('technical SEO services') beat generic ones ('click here'). And be consistent: link to the one page that owns a topic with related anchor text, rather than pointing the same anchor at several pages, which muddies which one should rank.

Build the topic cluster

Internal linking is how a topic cluster works: a pillar page and its supporting pages linking to each other signal genuine depth on a subject and concentrate the group's authority. This is the practical mechanism behind good site architecture. Links are what turn a pile of pages into a structure.

Related questions

Quick answers.

How many internal links per page?

Enough to connect the page usefully to related ones. No magic number. Link where it genuinely helps the reader and signals relevance; don't stuff dozens of forced links. Relevance and usefulness, not a quota.

Do internal links really affect rankings?

Yes: they're a genuine, controllable factor shaping crawling, topical signals and authority flow. They won't outrank a fundamentally more authoritative competitor alone, but they're one of the highest-return, lowest-cost levers most sites ignore.

What's the best anchor text for internal links?

Descriptive and natural: text that describes the target page ('local SEO services'), varied enough to read naturally, and consistent in pointing a given topic's anchor at the one page that owns it.
