Branded vs. non-branded search: why the difference matters.
Branded searches include your name; non-branded ones don't. They behave completely differently, and mixing them up flatters your reporting and hides whether SEO is actually growing your reach. Here's why the split matters.
In short
Branded searches come from people who already know you; non-branded from people who don't. Report them separately. Non-branded growth is SEO reaching new customers, while branded growth mostly reflects awareness you earned elsewhere. Mixing them flatters the numbers and hides the truth.
The two kinds, and who's searching
Branded searches come from people who already know you: existing customers, referrals, people who saw an ad. Non-branded searches come from people looking for what you sell who don't yet know you exist. Branded traffic is easy to rank for and mostly reflects demand you already earned; non-branded is the hard, valuable work of reaching new people.
Why the distinction matters for reporting
Lumped together, branded traffic can make SEO look like it's working when it isn't. If a marketing push or word of mouth drives more people to search your name, branded traffic rises, but that's not your SEO reaching new customers. Splitting branded from non-branded shows whether you're actually growing reach or just harvesting existing demand.
What each tells you
Rising non-branded traffic means SEO is doing its job: reaching people who didn't know you. Rising branded traffic means your overall brand awareness is growing. Good, but not usually SEO's doing. You want both, but you should measure them separately, and hold SEO primarily to the non-branded number.

Related questions
Quick answers.
How do I separate branded from non-branded?
In Search Console you can filter queries containing your brand name to isolate branded, and exclude it to see non-branded. It's a basic split, but most reports skip it, and it changes the story.
Should I even target branded searches?
You should own them: ranking for your own name, reviews and products is easy and important, since those searchers are ready to act. Just don't count branded growth as proof your SEO is reaching new customers.
Which matters more?
For growth, non-branded. It's how SEO reaches people who don't know you. Branded matters for capturing demand you've already created. A healthy program grows non-branded reach while reliably owning the branded terms.
